A full day is ideal. Spend the morning climbing to the Malaspina Castle for the panoramic views over the river and the colorful rooftops below, then lose a couple of hours wandering the narrow cobblestone lanes of Sa Costa, the medieval quarter at the castle's base. After lunch at a riverside café, the old tanneries along the Temo and the beach at Bosa Marina are easy additions. Six to seven hours covers the highlights comfortably.
The historic center is entirely walkable — in fact, most of the best streets are pedestrian-only. The main challenge is that reaching the Malaspina Castle involves a fairly steep climb up through Sa Costa, so comfortable shoes matter more than transportation. Bosa Marina, the beach area about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the old town, is a short ride away if you want to add a beach stop to your day.
More than most visitors expect. The Sa Costa quarter is a labyrinth of pedestrian-only streets lined with pastel facades, flower-draped balconies, and local craft shops — it rewards slow, aimless wandering. The Museo delle Conce occupies a beautifully preserved 19th-century tannery and tells the story of Bosa's leather-working heritage through the original stone soaking tanks. The Church of San Pietro extra muros, a Romanesque gem just outside town, contains 14th-century frescoes that are remarkably well preserved. And Bosa is the home of Malvasia di Bosa, a DOC dessert wine with a loyal following — worth a glass at a local enoteca before you leave.
Bosa is one of Italy's officially recognized most beautiful villages, and it earns that title. The town unfolds in layers: pastel-colored medieval houses climbing the hillside, the 12th-century Malaspina Castle crowning the hill above, and the Temo River — Sardinia's only navigable river — winding through it all toward the sea. Alghero is the most popular starting point, roughly 45 km (28 miles) to the north, and the coastal road connecting the two is considered one of the most scenic drives in Sardinia.
