Traveling from the eternal city of Rome to Gubbio and touring Italy opens up a world of wonders. Yet, it's no surprise that cities like this are overcrowded, with long attraction waiting lines, expensive food, and overpriced accommodations. But sometimes, you'll come across a place that is just as good, with emptier streets and more affordable everything. One such place is Gubbio.
A trip with Daytrip's door-to-door private transfer service from Rome to Gubbio will have your heart leaping as you prepare to visit a city that few know about. As you leave behind Rome, you encounter beautiful places. There's Tivoli with its stunning waterfalls, Todi with its Medieval, Etruscan, and Roman walls, and Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis and one of the most important religious destinations in the world.
Wander around any of these breathtaking stops when you travel with Daytrip while you prepare for the extravagance of Gubbio with its medieval aqueduct, Roman ruins, and sweeping hillside views. Gubbio is a treasure trove of exploration and well worth the visit.
No one can blame you if you haven't heard much about Gubbio since it is one of Italy's best-kept secrets. This hidden gem of a city is the perfect destination for those seeking a medieval town to get lost in while wandering cobblestone streets, peeking out windows, and crossing hills to see spectacular views.
This Umbrian town is less than 50 miles (80 km) from Perugia and a short drive from Assisi. Although it is near many phenomenal attractions, travelers often look it over as they race by train lines or highways, never knowing what they miss out on.
But their loss is your gain. You'll get to authentically experience Gubbio in all its glory, from its views of the beautiful Apennines Mountains, medieval architecture, and 16th-century cathedrals to its Baroque chapel and welcoming Civic Museum, which holds within its walls great treasures. Part of this treasure is Iguvine tablets and bronze slabs with ancient inscriptions just waiting for your eyes to behold. So what are you waiting for? Book with Daytrip and start planning your Gubbio adventure.
Traveling from Rome to Gubbio can be an exciting and eye-opening experience if you travel the right way, which includes following a few travel tips like the ones listed below:
Don't listen to what some people tell you. No matter where you travel in Italy, it is safe to drink tap water, even in places you visit, such as Rome and Gubbio. However, it's important to note that the taste of the water might differ from city to city, so if that bothers you, buy bottled water. If you travel with Daytrip, we'll provide you with bottled water to keep you hydrated and ready to explore.
Italy is beautiful, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its fair share of challenges, like incredibly hot summer days and pesky mosquitoes. So, if you're traveling from Rome to Gubbio and you plan on exploring the Carsulae Archeological Site or visiting the waterfalls in Tivoli, you'll need to pack mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
Swimwear at all times of the day is a no-go when touring Italy. Italians are a nation that cares about making a good impression alongside a beautiful appearance, so it's not common to see Italians walking around popular places in flip-flops, shorts, bikinis, or shirtless unless they're at the beach. So, if you're not at the beach, leave your swimsuit in your luggage and dress up when you go to dinner.
How do you get from Rome to Gubbio? Since Rome is a popular destination, it's a city with many travel options both to and from it. This is fortunate for travelers since it means there are usually many travel options. Below, we've shared three transportation options you should consider if you want to travel from Rome to Gubbio.
Numerous bus lines like Flixbus, Sulga Autolinee, Autolinee Federico, Autolinee Liscio, Inter Saj, and Busitalia - Sita Nord offer daily trips from Rome to Gubbio – some more than others. On average, a ticket could set you back as little as $5 (€4.60) or as much as $22 (€20.25), depending on the coach line you book with and when you decide to travel.
A bus trip between these cities usually takes about four and a half hours. It's an affordable option but not the most comfortable or accommodating when it comes to sightseeing, so keep this in mind.
When traveling from Rome to Gubbio by train, it's important to pay attention to times when booking. There are high-speed trains and regular trains. The high-speed trains will get you between the cities in about two hours and 10 minutes, while the normal trains can take up to 16 hours with multiple transfers and stopovers.
Surprisingly, high-speed and regular trains offer trips at similar pricing, with most tickets starting at $17 (€15.60). Neither train nor bus provides sightseeing opportunities, but you should get more amenities when traveling with a Trenitalia train than with a bus.
The distance between Rome and Gubbio isn't so great that you must plan more than a day trip when traveling from one city to the next. However, this is typically only the case if you travel with a private car transfer service like Daytrip.
Daytrip can travel the distance in about two hours and 40 minutes if you want to enjoy a direct trip from Rome to Gubbio. Even if you choose to add sightseeing stops, you might still get to Gubbio in time to tour the city and travel back to Rome within a day's timeframe.
Booking with Daytrip is convenient and affordable, with seats costing about $72 (€66) per trip in a comfy sedan. This all-inclusive fee includes door-to-door service, luggage handling, route customization, a friendly and professional English-speaking driver, and travel tips and insights.
Gubbio might not be as famous as other cities in Italy, but once you drive from Rome to Gubbio and arrive in the city, you won't run out of things to do. From downtown explorations of boutique shops and museums to meal hopping at different niche restaurants, there's something for everyone in this city.
Rome and Verona might have some of the best-preserved examples of Roman ruins, but Gubbio does too. Unbeknownst to many, Gubbio is home to Roman theater ruins dating back to 20 BC. This arena was able to host 6,000 people during its heyday, and when you visit, you can admire the theater from the outside or wander within its walls with a guided tour.
Did you know that Gubbio has one of the most unique cable cars in Italy and the world? Gubbio's Funivia cars can be likened to rickety, old bird cages with no doors. You can hop into one, and it will transport you to the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo. On your way there, you can watch the city spread out around you and take in the gorgeous architecture as you dangle precariously from a small basket-type cage. It's not for the faint of heart, but the adventurous will love it.
To those who visit Gubbio's Piazza Grande, it's one of the grandest in the world. This Piazza looks much the same as it used to when it was built in the 14th century. So why not visit it when in Gubbio and enjoy the ambiance of feeling like you've stepped back in time?
Unsurprisingly, Gubbio has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters, so it can be visited year-round. Although it can be visited any time of year, if you're traveling from Rome to Gubbio, the best time to visit is usually between May and October. These months offer warm weather with temperatures around 69°F (20.5°C) and very little rain.
But if we had to pick only one month, we would suggest May. Not only is the weather nice, but the city also hosts a candle festival or the Festa dei Ceri, which is one of the best local festivals in the region. This festival has been underway since the 12th century and takes place typically around the 15th of May every year in honor of Sant'Ubaldo, the patron saint of the city in Umbria.

28. Feb. 2025“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”

20. Feb. 2025“We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”

10. Feb. 2025“We used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.”
