Your trip from Barcelona to Lourdes will take you to a small town in the Pyrenees mountains, renowned worldwide as one of the most important religious pilgrimage sites. Each year, millions of visitors seeking healing and spiritual solace flock to this sacred place, drawn by its profound religious significance. The town's fame originates from the Marian apparitions of 1858 when a 14-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, reported visions of the Virgin Mary in the Grotto of Massabielle.
This serene town offers a unique blend of spiritual tranquility and natural beauty. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, the central point of the town, preserves the grotto, several basilicas, and baths where pilgrims immerse themselves in the water, believed to have healing powers. There are three basilicas situated in the Sanctuary. The most outstanding one is The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, which according to Bernadette Soubirous was initiated by the Virgin Mary herself, stating “Go and tell the priests to build a chapel here and that people should come in procession.” The other two basilicas are The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and The Basilica of St Pius X. The latter is more modern, built in 1958, and it is striking to visitors due to its architectural allure. It is an underground church with the capacity to hold 25,000 worshippers.
Lourdes preserves the belief and joy brought to millions of people every year. For serenity, calmness, and the beauty of the French countryside, Lourdes is a perfect place to visit.

Don’t hesitate to book your trip in advance, add your stops to your itinerary and get ready for a smooth journey.
Traveling to Lourdes by train takes seven to ten hours, usually with one or two transfers, often in Toulouse and Tarbes. The railway passes through the Pyrenees, which makes the train ride a very scenic one. While it is a better option than driving because it saves you the stress, it can be time-consuming due to transfers and waiting times. Check the train schedules here.
By far the longest option, the bus ride takes about 10 to 14 hours, depending on the service.
It is a more economical option compared to other modes of transportation, but the longer travel time makes traveling by bus the least comfortable way to reach Lourdes.
There are flights that can take you near Lourdes. The flight to Toulouse or Pau is around 1 hour, followed by a train or bus to Lourdes (an additional two to four hours). It is the quickest way to cover the long distance but it requires additional transportation from the airport to Lourdes. Taking a plane is not a direct option and can be costly.
Getting from Barcelona to Lourdes, a town famous for its sacred atmosphere, will certainly be rewarding! Besides its religious connotations, Lourdes also offers a beautiful backdrop to your European vacation. Here are some of the many things you’ll be enjoying throughout your visit to Lourdes;
Explore Lourdes Covered Market to get a unique glimpse into the regional customs and goods as well as traditional foods and ingredients. In this market, covered by the roof of a 19th century building, you’ll see many stands offering a wide variety of local delicacies and fresh produce. Take in the sights, and scents of the market while filling your basket with locally produced goods.
Pic du Jer, overlooking picturesque Lourdes and located in the Pyrenees, has breathtaking panoramic views accessible via a historic funicular railway or a three-hour hike. At the summit, explore walking trails, observatories, and hidden grottos. This century-old railway journey ascends to 3,050 feet, providing a memorable adventure. The area also features nice restaurants and guided tours of glacial caves. The funicular operates daily except in winter, starting near the Lourdes train station.
The Grotto of Massabielle is a cave renowned for visions of the Virgin Mary and healing waters attracting six million pilgrims annually. Visitors are drawn to its miraculous spring, seeking healing and spiritual solace. The site includes the Sanctuary of Notre Dame de Lourdes, offering a profound experience with baths for immersion in the sacred waters. Admission is free, emphasizing respect for its religious significance.
One of the three basilicas at the Sanctuary of Lourdes, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary stands out as the most colorful and artistic one. Step into some of the finest examples of Byzantine-style mosaics in this smaller, but striking, basilica. It is said that the two arched ramps framing the church are designed to reflect a motherly embrace welcoming its visitors. There are also 15 chapels decorated with works of art, each of which representing an element of theology.
Plan your trip from Barcelona to Lourdes by considering your preferences about the weather and the size of the crowds you can endure. The peak pilgrimage season is from April to October, with the weather being mild to warm, ideal for exploring the town and participating in outdoor religious ceremonies. Keep in mind that this period also sees the highest number of visitors.
If you're looking to avoid the crowds but with good weather, visit during the months of April, May, early June, late September, or October. You'll find fewer visitors, more comfortable weather, and the town's sites will still be fully accessible.
For those interested in participating in specific religious events, the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th is a significant day in Lourdes, with special ceremonies and processions. This marks one of the busiest times in Lourdes.

28. Feb. 2025“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”

20. Feb. 2025“We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”

10. Feb. 2025“I’m writing this review about a fantastic experience we had with Daytrip on September 21,2018. We were a party of 7 and had a scheduled pick up of 9 am at our Erik Vokel Apartment in Barcelona and our driver, Pere was there way before schedule. He immediately took our luggages and handed us water and candies for our trip. Sometime during our trip, our little 2 year old started to throw up as she has not been feeling very well . He stopped to help us clean her up and offered to take us to the nearest pharmacy to get some medicine. He took us to a very scenic route and always asked us if we would like to take photos, which we did! I took the front passenger/co-pilot seat and he pointed out many sceneries that I enjoyed a lot. It was my first time to visit France and Pere made it such an enjoyable experience. He was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. At one point we saw a sheep farm and we asked if we could stop and buy some cheese. Yet again, he helped us converse with the farmer as our French couldn’t take us anywhere! We arrived at our destination safe and sound and did not notice the 10 hour travel at all! I highly recommend Daytrip to anyone who needs transfers or driver services. It was worth every penny we paid! The Philippine Group from Southern California 😍”
