From the sun-soaked coast of Split to the shady porticoes of Bologna, embark on an amazing journey. As you leave Split, say goodbye to the Adriatic's blue waves and Marjan’s pine-forest aromas. Get one last taste of Croatia’s natural beauty at Krka National Park before crossing the border into Slovenia.
Daytrip offers an 8-hour and 10-minute transportation from Split to Bologna that emphasizes both the journey and the destination, with every turn along the 487-mile route offering new discoveries.
Once in Italy, you have the chance to visit attractions like Palmanova Outlet, where you can get a jump start on your shopping, or the multidisciplinary Castello di Monselice. As you arrive in Bologna, the culinary capital, the aroma of fresh tagliatelle al ragù beckons. With Daytrip you can make this long-distance journey a memorable part of your travel adventure.
Tucked in the center of Italy, Bologna is a city where modernism and tradition blend. It attracts visitors with its red terracotta buildings, medieval towers, and bustling culinary scene. The iconic porticoes, which offer shady passageways throughout the city, are so iconic that they've been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every cobblestone street has a story, and every meal is a celebration.
Bologna's 2,000-year history is fascinating, blending Etruscan, Roman, and medieval influences. Established by the Etruscans, it became a major Roman metropolis.
In 1088, Bologna founded the world's first university, a beacon of learning that still shines today. Walk around the historic center and absorb centuries of history. While the vast Piazza Maggiore whispers of public gatherings and old marketplaces, the Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, remain as sentinels of the medieval power of the city.
Bologna, however, is not stuck in the past. This vibrant modern metropolis hums with innovation and life. Walk its porticoed streets, and you will find a mix of modernism and tradition. Modern boutiques coexist with centuries-old stores; tech companies flourish next to historic institutions.
The city's gastronomic expertise is legendary, earning it the nickname "La Grassa" (The Fat One). Dive into a plate of tagliatelle al ragù or indulge in mortadella, and you'll understand why.
Bologna also boasts an active cultural scene, from avant-garde art exhibitions to cutting-edge music festivals. A city where the past and present merge in a symphony of sights, sounds, and tastes as the artistic endeavors of the Renaissance carry on their own life.
Enhance your Split to Bologna transfer with these handy travel tips. Discover scenic stops, pack smartly, and learn a few basic Italian phrases to make your trip more enjoyable:
If you're driving from Split to Bologna, make time for some scenic stops. Explore Croatia's Krka National Park or Miramare Castle in Trieste, known for its white stone towers. These short deviations can make this journey a memorable part of your transfer.
Navigating Italy's cobblestone streets might be difficult with bulky baggage. Pack light and choose a lightweight suitcase or a robust backpack. This will make it easier to get around.
Of course, if you're riding with Daytrip, you can pack whatever you want since your driver will drop you off at your final destination in Bologna and handle your luggage!
Using basic Italian phrases while traveling can enhance your experience. Greet locals with a friendly "Buongiorno" (Good morning) or "Ciao" (Hello). Ordering food at Bologna restaurants? Try "Vorrei..." (I would "like…) and "Grazie" (Thank you). A little effort in learning some essential phrases goes a long way to making connections.
Whether you're a budget-conscious traveler or craving luxury, there's a perfect transportation option for your Split to Bologna transfer. Sail through scenic seas, hop on a bus, catch a train, or fly high above the scenery. Each trip offers a mix of lively cities, calm countryside, and everything in between.
Opt for FlixBus for a budget-friendly option. This journey only runs five times a week. There is no direct bus from Split to Bologna, so you must take one change at either Zagreb or Ljubljana. It takes around 13 to 14 hours, and prices are from $70 to $100 (€65-€90).
Similar to the bus service, there are no direct trains from Split to Bologna. The train takes longer than the bus, requires multiple transfers, and is expensive. It's not a recommended mode of travel unless you want to spend the night in the stopover cities.
While there is no direct ferry from Split to Bologna, you can take an overnight ferry from Split to Ancona for a unique experience. The ferry will take around 11 hours and 30 minutes to reach Ancona, and one-way tickets start as low as $14 (€13). Once there, enjoy a restful night on the Adriatic Sea before continuing your journey to Bologna by train, bus, or private car transfer to Bologna.
Choose Daytrip for a seamless, door-to-door experience. Enjoy the comfort of a private car, local insights, and stops at charming town locations. This trip will take around 8 hours and 10 minutes to travel the 487-mile (785 km) distance, with additional time if you add sightseeing stops.
Before leaving Croatia, you could stop at Šibenik, home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while crossing over Slovenia, take a detour to Škocjan Caves, and once in Italy, fashion enthusiasts can enjoy the Palmanova Outlet with over 90 outlets located in the town of Palmanova, famous for its star fort design; this shopping village is a perfect pit-stop before continuing your Split to Bologna transfer.
Flying is the quickest way to get from Split to Bologna; however, as there are no direct flights, you will need to take a connecting flight from a connecting city such as Rome; the quickest flight takes 4 to 5 hours.
After you add in the time getting to and from the airport, 2 hours for check-in and security, and at least 30 minutes to get off the plane and get your luggage, the total travel time is more like 7-8 hours. About the same as a private car but with extra stress and hassle.
Bologna bursts with history and culture, promising unforgettable experiences at every corner. Dive into this enchanting city with these four activities that capture its essence.
Start your trip in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna's energetic center. Perfect for savoring the city's medieval charm, this busy square is surrounded by historic buildings such as the Basilica di San Petronio and Palazzo d'Accursio.
Many of the square's buildings, and the surrounding streets, are lined with porticos, which are the symbol of Bologna. Some 38.5 miles (62 km) of these covered passageways are part of Bologna's UNESCO World Heritage Site, so be sure to pay attention to the varying ages and styles; they date from the 12th century to the present!
Ascend the Asinelli Tower, one of Bologna's "Two Towers," for spectacular views of the city. It has 498 steps, so it can be a bit challenging, but the panoramic views at the top are well worth the effort. Gaze upon the red-tiled roofs and, on clear days, see the Alps and Apennine mountains in the distance.
No trip to Bologna is complete without diving into its culinary scene. Starting in the busy Quadrilatero Market, where little lanes brim with food stalls, delis, and little restaurants.
Savor regional delicacies include velvety Mortadella, tortellini in Brodo, and the iconic venerable Tagliatelle al Ragù. Pair these with a glass of local wine and finish your dinner with a rich espresso. Every bite celebrates Bologna's culinary brilliance and showcases the best of Bologna food!
Perched atop Colle della Guardia, the 12th-century Madonna di San Luca offers stunning views of Bologna. Part of the excitement is getting there; a portico with 666 arches stretches over 3.8 kilometers.
Inside the sanctuary, you'll see stunning frescoes and detailed embellishments. The trek may be a little strenuous, but the view and sense of achievement at the top make it worthwhile.
Year-round, Bologna welcomes visitors with its rich history and cuisine. Bologna is best visited between April through June and September through October to stroll through medieval streets bathed in golden sunlight.
Summer festivals are full of fun, music, and the delicious smells of Pignoletto. Experience the magic of summer in Bologna with outdoor movies at Sotto le Stelle del Cinema and the Piazza Maggiore transforms into a free open-air cinema on Europe's largest outdoor movie screen.
In spring, blooming flowers paint the city in Renaissance colors and the Imola Circuit, a mere hop from Bologna, bursts with speed, drawing adrenaline junkies with thrilling events like Formula 1 races and historic car rallies.
Autumn wraps Bologna in a cozy, amber blanket, perfect for savoring rich wines and truffle dishes. Picture yourself under the porticoes of Bologna, wandering through bustling markets and inhaling the rich aroma of freshly made pasta.

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation
“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”
“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”
“Used the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.”
Comfortable and Safe Rides in Mexico
“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”
