Zedazeni Monastery stands as one of Georgia’s oldest monastic complexes, founded in the 6th century by Saint John, a revered Assyrian Father of Georgia. It replaced the ancient cult of Zaden, the god of fruitfulness, whose idol was purportedly destroyed along with all other pagan idols by the prayers of St. Nino. Taking its name from the pagan deity it supplanted, Zedazeni Monastery includes a main church, John the Baptist Basilica, dating back to the 8th century with a triple-nave. The complex also includes a bell tower, a vestibule, and a defensive wall. Father John Zedazneli, who led the group of Christian preachers from Syria and established the monastery, rests within its grounds. The monastery can be reached by a paved road or by embarking on a scenic hike through the enchanting hornbeam and beech forests near Saguramo village. Enjoy views of the pastoral landscape and visit on May 20th for the official Zedaznoba, whereby the monastery celebrates the thirteen Syrian Fathers who played a crucial role in Georgian history.
