Totara Estate

New Zealand’s still-booming meat industry was pioneered by this unassuming farm.

Sobre

Totara Estate began in the 1850s as a fairly large sheep farm, but after a drop in wool prices oversupply meat, general manager William Davidson started looking for other sources of revenue. In 1881 a steam-powered freezer was added to the sailing ship Dunedin, which the Totara Estate used to send the first shipment of frozen meat from New Zealand to London. This single voyage revolutionized New Zealand’s economy, and kickstarted what is today a multi-billion dollar industry. Totara Estate’s restored buildings preserve New Zealand’s transition from colony to first-world country, and while exploring the grounds, you’ll hear recorded stories of the men who worked here. Of course, along with the historic stone buildings, you’ll also find pastoral views, grazing sheep, and friendly farm animals. Afterwards, head to the old cookhouse, which is now a cafe and museum showcasing vintage kitchen implements. If you really want to immerse yourself in the Victorian experience, they even loan out period costumes!
