Legend has it that in the 13th century when the Christians were fighting the Moors to regain control of the area, the Christian captain called on Saint Mary for more daylight. Miraculously, the sun remained on the horizon until the fight was over and the Christians had won. To honour such the event, the captain ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary. The Pope declared the building a monastery in the 16th century. Situated on a hilltop, the monastery offers beautiful panoramic views of the countryside. Inside, the 16th century altarpiece is made of tiles by Niculoso Pisano, and the funeral chapels display colourful tile wall decorations and exposed brick arches.
