Scientific Monument Moises Bertoni
Laboratory, library and, now, museum; the house of Moises Bertoni is not only a repository of knowledge about the surrounding jungle but also a love letter to the Guarani.
Sobre
Dedicated to Moises Bertoni, this monument is more national park than static sculpture. Bertoni was a Swiss scientist who moved himself and his family to Paraguay in 1894. Though a botanist by trade, Bertoni quickly fell in love with native Guarani culture and promised to protect and promote it. Collected samples, manuscripts, books and letters line the halls of his house which sits at the center of the 199 hectare monument. The house is surrounded by trails that go through the lush jungle where Bertoni did much of his research along with the local Mbya Guarani natives who still reside on the grounds as well. Bertoni not only studied the surrounding wilderness by himself but also learnt from the Guarani as they cooperated in the interest of furthering each others knowledge. The entry fee is about 10 USD for non Paraguayans, but includes the museum, the viewing of a documentary and hiking along the trails at this truly dynamic and unorthodox monument.
