Sarsina Cathedral
This austere church has its roots in the days of the East Roman Empire, and it’s still dotted with remnants of that time.
Sobre
Originally begun as in the Byzantine period, the church was reconstructed around the 11th century in the Romanesque style. Over the centuries, further transformations followed, including a Baroque remodeling. Fortunately, a campaign in the from 1958 to 1966 restored the church to its original appearance. The unfinished brick façade has a simple elegance to it, with a mosaic lunette above the entrance depicting the patron saint. Around the perimeter are several spoliated Roman tombstones and paleochristian objects, harkening back to its Byzantine origins. Likewise, the interior is austere with brick columns and a trussed ceiling. Inside are several medieval sculptures including a marble lectern from the 12th century, a 10th century altar frontal 10th century, and a late-Roman baptismal font. Throughout the church are also traces of the original Roman pavement, and the old crypt.
