Postel Abbey

Founded in 1138, Postel Abbey was at first a dependant priory, and wasn’t officially made an abbey until the 17th century. In 1797, the abbey was closed founded the monastery at Postel as a dependent priory. In 1613 Postel became independent of Floreffe and in 1618 was raised to the status of abbey. In 1797, the abbey was closed after French troops invaded the during the French Revolution. 50 years later, the monastic community returned and began restoring this historic complex. Today, visitors can see the various stages of the abbey’s history in the church, which was erected in the 12th century, but also has some Gothic and Baroque elements. While the abbey’s eponymous beer is no longer brewed on site, visitors can enjoy the abbey’s home-made cheese, or traditional food from the abbey kitchen to really enjoy the serene setting.
