Phnom Da
With the oldest known Khmer artwork, this seemingly humble hilltop temple could be considered the cradle of the Angkor civilization.
Sobre
Founded around the 6th century, Phnom Da was originally the capital of the Funan civilization. Over the years, it was incorporated into the various empires that ruled the region, and what stands today was erected in the 11th century under the Angkor empire. While the ruins are not the most impressive Angkor buildings, they are some of the most historically important, for they contain the oldest known Khmer inscriptions and sculptures. Along with the central temple, there are five man-made caves depicting the phallic symbol of Shiva worship. Visitors can hike further down the hill to reach the ruins of the 6th century Asram Maha Eysei, which was built in a distinctively Indian-style.
