In the early 2000s, Fernando Távora, one of Portugal’s most renowned modern architects, was given the task of overhauling Penafiel’s 17th century palace to create the Museu Municipal de Penafiel. Távora managed to preserve the building’s historic facade, while making a fully modern experience inside. Focusing on local archaeology, ethnography, and the country’s history, visitors will find a roman bath and medieval armour alongside traditional peasant furnishings and modern football jerseys all presented in a fascinating, coherent manner. In addition to the items in the permanent collection, a temporary exhibition area and multimedia room create fun and engaging learning experiences through audio-visual installations.
