Built between 1934 and 1944, the system of about 100 concrete defence structures, partially interconnected by a network of underground tunnels, was meant to halt any Soviet offensive. The many kilometers of tunnels housed railway stations, workshops, engine rooms and barracks, making it the Nazi’s most technologically advanced fortification system. It still remains one of the largest and the most interesting systems of its type in the world. Years of construction and planning were wasted when the Soviet army’s rapid advance in the Vistula–Oder Offensive broke through the undermanned defense line in only three days. Now the system serves an unplanned purpose- 35,000 bats of 12 species take shelter here in the wintertime. Guides lead visitors through the many tunnels and rooms. Just remember a sweater.
