Hvitserkur
This beautiful sea stack is said to be a troll turned to stone by the morning sun.
Sobre
According to local legend, Hvitserkur was once a troll that lived in Strandir. As Icelandic trolls are pagans, they can’t stand the sound of church bells, and this one was on its way to silence Þingeyraklaustur convent for good. However, before it could reach the convent, it was caught by the rising sun and turned to stone. The less fun, geological explanation, is that this sea stack is a formation of volcanic basalt that has been slowly eroded by the sea. The 15-meter tall formation is a nesting ground for sea-gulls, whose droppings gave it its Icelandic name: “white shirt”. Photographers also flock here to capture the sun, moon, and Northern Lights as they play in the calm waters around the unusual rock formation. The area is home to one of Iceland’s seal colonies, and they’re often visible from the clifftop, or you can follow a nearby path to a river estuary for a closer look.
