First appearing in the 1850, the Cerro Negro Volcano is the youngest in Central America. Cerro Negro has erupted frequently in its short lifetime, with a 1999 outburst leaving a wide border of black rocks and ash at the base of its slope. Despite being just 500 meters tall, the steep slope proves a difficult hike, requiring good footwear and plenty of water. From the top, you can peer into the caldera, and gaze out over the surrounding landscape. For adrenaline seekers, the real reward comes in the descent. One face, which is too steep to climb, makes for an exhilarating slide-and-run down the black sand slopes. You can even sign up to go ‘volcano-boarding’!
