Archaeological Ensemble of Baelo Claudia
This award-winning archaeological site is an impressive reference point for gaining insight into Roman city planning and urban life.
Sobre
Baelo Claudia first emerged in the 2nd century B.C. in an area of great strategic importance: The Straits of Gibraltar. Serving as a main trading point with North Africa, the city saw a great deal of prosperity during its peak years, and visitors can now have a first-hand look into the brilliance of this once-great Empire. Among the ruins is a circular protective wall, the main gate, administrative buildings, the form, as well as evidence of aqueducts and a sewer system. The city also hosts temples dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, Juno, Jupiter, and Minerva, rather than one temple dedicated to them collectively; the only example of such arrangement in Europe. Don’t miss your chance to visit this site during your travels through Spain, as no other site on the Iberian Peninsula affords such a complete vision of the Roman urban experience.
