About
Built at the turn of the 17th century by Duke Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, a favourite of King Henry III, and opponent of King Henry IV, the chateau’s founder even played a role in the assassination of the latter. The magnificent chateau, one of the first examples of "à la française" architecture, once had an impressive 60 rooms. In the 18th century, the much of the chateau was deconstructed to sell as building supplies, leaving only the main building and the two adjoining lower wings. Following the French Revolution, the castle was used as a women's prison, notorious for its high mortality rate and the harsh living conditions - the gorgeous fireplaces being used as toilets instead of for heating. Today, visitors can learn about the chateau’s long history, admiring the monumental fireplaces with carved figures, the painted ceilings, and one of France’s finest tapestry collections.
