Tourbillon Castle
Climb this castle’s winding natural staircase for breathtaking views of the Rhone Valley below
About
Built in 1290, the Tourbillon castle ruins are what remain of a true middle age fortress. Once the spectacular residence of the Prince-Bishop of Sion, today the ruins stand as a well-preserved symbol of this time period. Ravaged by a fire that struck the entire town of Sion in 1788, these ruins have remained largely untouched since that time. Take a break from your climb up the staircase to admire the 17th century homes along the narrow cobblestone streets Although a bit of a hike, the steps are a small price to pay for such spectacular and breathtaking views. Once at the top, wander around the ruins and experience these panoramic views for yourself. Grab a coffee from the small café, or pack a picnic to eat in the gardens. This site is closed in the winter, as it is better to enjoy its splendor in the spring, summer, and autumn.
