Taroko National Park
From the seaside to the jungle to some of Taiwan’s tallest mountains, Taroko National Park has Taiwan’s most diverse landscapes.
About
Taroko National Park is a designated protected landscape whose name is derived from the Truku tribe, an indigenous group that primarily resides in the region. Trails for all skill levels and religious shrines can be found all over, but the main attraction in all of Taroko National Park’s 360 square miles (920 sq km) is the Taroko Gorge. Marble is notoriously resistant to erosion, but the Liwu River still carved Taroko Gorge from the bedrock. The resulting gorge is dramatically steep with very narrow, almost vertical, marble walls. Park entry is free, but some sections require a permit to prevent excessive damage from human activity. Because Taroko National Park is in the subtropical wilderness, it is also occasionally subject to dangerous conditions from earthquakes and heavy rain.
