Spitzkoppe
One of Namibia’s most iconic mountains, this rocky spur is famed for its unusual formations, rock paintings, and challenging ascent.
About
Spitzkoppe is a twin peak, with the larger Matterhorn-shaped summit reaching a height of 1728 meters. For hard-core climbers, it’s a grueling challenge - steep, and unclimbable in the summer because of the scorching heat, only 600 people have made the ascent. For hikers, however, the area is a natural paradise. Many of the dramatic formations like the iconic ‘rock bridge’ were featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and hundreds of rock paintings can be found. Some of these depict rhino, indicating that the animals once roamed here.
