Colombia
Rio Claro Valley
Home to an abundance of endemic species, this lush river valley offers visitors a variety of outdoor activities.
About
The Rio Claro Valley is a small private nature reserve just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of Medellín. Here, the cool waters of the Rio Claro flow through a marble canyon that over millions of years has transformed from sea bed to dense rainforest. Labelled as one of Colombia’s endemic hotspots, the park is home to hundreds of different species, ranging from the brilliant blue Morpho butterflies to howler monkeys and otters. Bird watchers flock here for the 350 avian species that call the park home, several of which are endangered. The park and its eco-lodge are popular among nature-loving Colombians and foreigners alike who come to enjoy the scenery and the many outdoor activities offered here, from rafting down the river through exploring the Cueva de los Guacharos. Activities must be booked in advance, so you’ll want to contact the park before your visit at http://www.rioclaroreservanatural.com/index.html
