Recski Labour Camp Memorial

Thousands of Socialist opponents from all stations of society were forced to work- often to death- at this secret gulag.

About

Between 1950 and 1953, under the Socialist regime, thousands of ‘Enemies of the People’ were taken to this forced labour camp, after being tortured into a confession. The camp was sealed off from the outside world, its prisoners forced to work tirelessly with little food. To supplement their measly meals, they would eat whatever they could find - everything from berries to snails and lizards. Many died from starvation, exhaustion, or at the hands of the guards, though what happened to the bodies still remains a mystery. world outside. After the regime change, a memorial was erected to commemorate the thousands who suffered and died here, and the tower and barracks reconstructed to educate visitors on their plight.
