Racos Volcano
An ancient volcano, million-year-old stone formations, and a vivid turquoise lake make a unique and beautiful landscape.
About
A reminder of the how the region’s landscape was formed, visitors can walk through the remains of a volcano that hasn’t been active in 10,000 years. The copse of trees in the crater contrasts with the rusty red soil, feeling like a terraformed Mars rather than a natural occurrence. Nearby, stands a series of million-year-old basalt columns - a naturally occurring phenomenon creating straight rods. The area’s basalt was mined for a period, but since being abandoned, the former quarry has filled with vibrant turquoise water, becoming a favourite swimming hole for locals, and adding another facet to this scenic landscape.
