About

Founded in 1549, Pamplona was a major contributor to Colombia’s independence, earning it the nickname “The Patriotic City” from Simon Bolivar. A major earthquake in 1875 destroyed a large portion of the city, making room for more modern buildings, and the universities add an energetic atmosphere to the centuries-old streets. The 16th century Cathedral, with its Renaissance facade is undoubtedly the city’s most regal landmark, and offers great views of the main square from its bell tower. The square itself is one of the largest in the country, and is usually filled with students and street vendors, who come to take advantage of the wide-open space. The city’s Museum of Modern Art is also worth a visit if just to see angular sculptures set in a Colonial building.
