South Africa
Learn about South Africa’s apartheid regime at the exact spot Nelson Mandela was apprehended.
The Nelson Mandela Capture Site marks the very place that South Africa’s Nobel-prize-winning former president was apprehended by the Apartheid regime and subsequently imprisoned for 27 years. Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to establish racial and social equality in time when South Africa was gripped by violent segregation. Today, the capture site hosts a cultural and historical exhibition where visitors can learn about apartheid, and Mandela himself. Mandela is further honored by a unique sculpture of laser-cut columns, which align to form his face when viewed from a certain angle. The site is continuously being expanded and improved with plans to make an amphitheatre, theatre, museum, and arts and crafts centre in place.
