The regal ruins of this medieval abbey are a historic treasure at the heart of the Poitou marshes.
Founded in 1003 on the site of a former castle, Benedictine monks moved in in 1010. In the 13th century, the abbey was pillaged by the count of Mervent-Vouvant on several occasions. It quickly recovered, being named a Bishopric by Pope John XXII in 1317, though he allowed the monks to stay. The abbey flourished up until the French Revolution, when it was seized by the state and sold for demolition. Today, visitors can ogle the ruins of the once-great Gothic Cathedral, and and the seven halls of its monastic buildings, including the refectories, cellar, salt store, dormitories, and kitchen. Throughout the year, the abbey also hold special events such as a classical music festival, and the Sentinelle du Marais, where famous people from the abbey’s history are brought to life.
