Lin is on a small peninsula along the stunning Lake Ohrid. This village is a hidden historical treasure with evidence in its soil of human civilization dating back over 8,500 years. As potentially the oldest pile-dwelling settlement in Europe, this remarkable Albanian village changes what archeologists know about building technology during the prehistoric and Byzantine heritage. Pile dwellings are homes built over marshy land by driving piles, or stakes, into the soft earth. Homes are then built on top of the stakes. The most famous examples of this are in Venice and Amsterdam, but even down in ancient Albania, we now have evidence of this technology. Lin’s archaeological wonders also include the remains of an early Christian Byzantine church with intricate 6th-century mosaics.
