Hestercombe Gardens

Surrounding an elegant country house, these historic gardens span three centuries of landscape design styles.

About

Spread out over 50 acres, the Hestercombe Gardens were first laid out in the 18th century, as a Georgian landscape complete with ponds, a grand cascade, a Gothic alcove, and follies. In the 1870s, a Victorian formal parterre was added by Henry Hall, and the early 20th century saw Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens lay out an Arts and Crafts style Edwardian garden, renowned for its attention to detail and bold patterns. Today, the Hestercombe Gardens provide a unique opportunity to experience three different eras of garden design in one place. On a single walk, visitors can enjoy colorful flower-beds, woodland paths, lakeside views, classical temples, and tumbling cascades. Afterwards you can step into the historic house to admire the contemporary art exhibition, or if you’re feeling hungry, stop by the Stables Cafe, or tuck into an elegant three-course lunch at the Column Room Restaurant.
