Heroes' Acre
Built to honor and enshrine the men who fought to preserve Namibia’s cultural identity, this massive monument was interestingly built by North Korea.
About
Heroes' Acre was commissioned by the first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, to preserve the legacy of some of Namibia’s most respected patriots. Honored here are tribal leaders who fought against colonialism, anti-apartheid activists, and politicians who worked to build Namibia’s identity on an international level, and veterans who fought for its independence. The towering obelisk, marble gravestones, giant bronze mural, and bronze statue of Sam Nujoma were constructed by a North Korean firm in the ‘socialist realism’ style - offering a rare glimpse at the country’s art and architecture.
