Golubac Fortress

10 towers, thick walls and a strategic location made this medieval fortress an integral part of the Hungarian Empire’s defense against the Ottomans.

About

Built in the 14th century on the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement, Golubac was hotly contested for centuries, having passed between the Turks, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Serbs, and Austrians. Its position as the last military outpost on that stretch of the Danube river made it part of the final line of defense between Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. Visitors can appreciate stunning views of the vast fortress as a gestalt, or walk along the battlements for a closer look. The road through the castle is the shortest link between Serbia and eastern parts of the Balkan Peninsula. Unfortunately even the 2-3 meter thick walls could save the lower parts of the fortress from rising water levels cause by the installation of a hydroelectric dam.
