Cala Morell Necropolis
Explore and be amazed at this prehistoric cemetery consisting of 14 caves remarkably carved thousands of years ago using ancient tools and techniques.
About
Nestled amongst the red rocks of the quiet resort of Cala Morell on Menorca’s north coast is the ancient Cala Morell ‘necropolis’, an extensive and elaborate cemetery. The earliest burial sites here date back to an astounding 1700 BC with the site being used as a cemetery until the 2nd Century AD. Take a break from the Mediterranean sun and explore the caves, where you can walk inside the 14 chambers and see up close the pillars and steps carved out of the rock, as well as 20 smaller carved cavities thought to have been used as tombs or for worshiping rituals for the dead. You will be astounded by the craftsmanship of the carved rock as you walk through, especially mind-blowing considering how ancient the site is! Once you have finished exploring the necropolis, take a short walk down to the secluded cove nearby for a moment of contemplation while watching the waves.
