Uganda
This privately-run game reserve offers a great chance for a roadside safari.
Covering 166 square kilometers, the Ajai Game Reserve dates back to the 1930s when the area was watched over by a local chief named Ajai. In 1965 it was officially named a game reserve, and remained home to a majority of the country’s white rhino population until the species went extinct in Uganda in the 1980s. Today, this remote reserve provides a great place to see many of the country’s savanna species including olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, lions, leopards, warthogs, zebras, and Uganda Kobs. The swampy surroundings provide a home to aquatic species including hippos, crocodiles and pythons. Please note that there is an admission fee ($10 per person), payable upon entry.
