Swabian Castle of Barletta

One of the largest medieval castles in Italy, this Crusader waypoint is best known as the site of a contest between French and Italian knights.

Sobre

Originally built under Norman rule in the 12th century, it was used by Frederick II from 1225 to 1228, and was where he issued his Diet - his directions for what to do while he was away on the 6th Crusade, and in case he died. In the 15th century, the castle was remodelled, with the addition of the lancet embankments seen today. During the first Spanish occupation from 1502-1503, the castle hosted part of the Spanish army. During this time, a small attachment of French troops were captured. One, Charles de la Motte, slandered the Italians’ valour, so knights from both sides faced off in a tournament to see who was more noble. The Italian knights won the battle, leaving the French to pay ransom. Today, visitors can enjoy the museum housed inside, which exhibits everything from local art dating back to the 15th century, to medieval weapons and armour, to jewellery.
