Qasr al-Harrana
Nobody knows exactly why this desert castle was built, but it’s one of the best-preserved and earliest Islamic buildings in the region.
Sobre
Qasr al-Harrana was built around the 7th century as part of a string of desert castles erected east of Amman by the Umayyad Dynasty. Though it’s called a “castle”, and has a martial bearing, the building's internal arrangement and window slits not designed for bowmen suggest it wasn’t a military structure. Another theory is that it could have been a caravanserai, or resting place for traders, but it’s not on any trade routes and lacks a water source. Regardless of its original use, the building is one of the earliest examples of Islamic architecture in the region, and presents a great opportunity to explore a well-preserved slice of early Islamic history.
