Powerscourt House Gardens
This historic manor and its breathtaking grounds have been named one of the best gardens and one of the best houses in the world.
Sobre
Powerscourt House and Gardens began as a 13th century castle before being transformed into a country house by the German architect Richard Cassels in the 18th century. A hundred years later, the 7th Viscount Powerscourt, Mervyn Wingfield, began an extensive renovation of the house and gardens, taking inspiration from the Palace of Versailles, Schönbrunn Palace near Vienna, and Schwetzingen Castle near Heidelberg. The result is the 3rd best garden in the world according to National Geographic. The 47 acre grounds include everything from formal walled gardens, a “Dolphin Pond”, serene Japanese gardens, an endearing pet cemetery, and even a stone tower modelled after a pepperpot. The manor, gutted by a fire in 1974, now offers visitors a fine shopping experience, and pleasant cafe from which to enjoy the manor’s spectacular views with a delicious snack.
