Károlyi Castle
This family fortress grew more extravagant over the centuries as the market town they helped establish flourished.
Sobre
As a reward for the Károlyi family’s military success, in 1346 King Louis I of Hungary permitted Carei to hold a weekly market gatherings. This influx in trade helped the town establish itself amidst the wars, plague, and famine of the middle ages. At the heart of town, the Károlyi family established their 14th century fortress. Surrounded by its own park, the Károlyis transformed their fortress into a castle in the 17th century. Today it houses the city museum of Carei, where visitors can learn about the history of the building and the city through the various tools, weapons, pottery and documents on display. A tour of the castle brings visitors through lavish rooms adorned with the original furniture from the early 19th century. The castle’s park is considered a protected arboretum, and is home to 208 different plant species, including a large plane tree from 1810.
