One of the best advantages of driving is being able to make stops at various places. You can stop by Kičevo, known for the richness of its culture and history. Its population is just over 27,000, and the surrounding area is decked with greenery.
Try to also stop at Mavrovo National Park. It’s a slight detour from the main route, but nature enthusiasts will love it. It features the Mavrovo Lake and a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking and skiing during winter.
As you continue your drive, visit the historic town of Tetovo. It’s home to the colorful Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque) and the ancient Tetovo Fortress, gifting insights into the region’s history.
Traveling from Ohrid to Skopje brings you to a destination steeped in history. Skopje is North Macedonia’s capital and largest city. As you discover this place, you’ll wander through its charming old town, marvel at statues and architecture, and explore the historic Stone Bridge, the city’s symbol. If there’s something that’s most remarkable about Skopje, it has to be its history and culture.
Originally known as Scupi, Skopje was a significant settlement in the ancient region of Dardania, inhabited by the Dardanians, an Illyrian tribe. This area, with a historical presence of ethnic Albanians, was part of the wider Illyrian territories.
Before the arrival of Slavic people in the sixth and seventh centuries, Scupi thrived under Roman rule, becoming a major urban center after its establishment as a Roman colony in the first century AD. It remained influential throughout the Roman Empire and into the Byzantine period, reflecting a blend of Roman and Byzantine cultural and architectural influences.
The Slavic migration in the early medieval period transformed the region’s demographic and cultural landscape. These new settlers gradually assimilated with the local population, leading to the development of a Slavic identity that eventually contributed to the formation of modern North Macedonia. Skopje's rich and diverse history is a testament to its enduring significance in the Balkans.

Before your trip from Ohrid to Skopje, open your notepad and jot down some of the tips we have in store for you.
First, pack appropriately. What’s suitable during one season isn’t in another. Skopje experiences hot summers and cold winters. When visiting in summer, pack lightweight clothing, sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Don’t forget to include comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle that’ll keep you hydrated.
When visiting during winter, prepare warm clothing, including a heavy coat, gloves, and hat. Skopje’s winter can be extremely chilly, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. Bring a tiny backpack, too, for day tours.
Even though you’re staying in the same country, ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including your passports and required visas.
Currency exchanges can be done at banks, exchange offices, or at the airport. While many establishments in Skopje accept credit cards, it's useful to have some cash for smaller vendors and markets.
Choosing the right transportation is up to you! Based on your preferences and travel style, these are the common options to get from Ohrid to Skopje.
Getting from Ohrid to Skopje by bus is the cheapest and most popular option. Buses run several times daily, with a timetable available at the Ohrid bus station. This way, you won’t miss your trip! Tickets cost between $9 (€8) and $27 (€25). However, the bus terminal is quite small, and you must pay to use the bathrooms, so make sure you carry some coins. There’s a supermarket within walking distance of the terminal, and taxis lined up outside.
You may also board a plane from Ohrid to Skopje. The nearest airport is the Skopje International Airport. Ohrid also has an airport, the Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport, but with limited flights to Skopje. Most flights involve a stop and take up to six hours, not including the time you’ll need to wait inside the airport. And tickets start at around $60 (€55).
There are no direct trains from Ohrid to Skopje. You can travel by train by combining it with a bus or taxi. You would need to take a bus or taxi from Ohrid to Bitola or Kičevo, where you can catch a train to Skopje.
Otherwise, if you don’t want the long waits and procedures in airports and the poor amenities in bus terminals, choose to drive a car. It’s flexible and allows you to explore places at your own pace. The duration of the trip is about three hours.
Driving a car yourself can be tiring. So, the best way is to book a private car service like Daytrip. It offers local English-speaking drivers who will bring you safely to Skopje and even provide their best insights about the stopovers.
Daytrip’s cars are clean, comfortable, air-conditioned, and smoke-free. It’s the perfect choice for families and those traveling with friends. Secure a seat for just $49 (€45) per person.
With so many fascinating things to do when you get from Ohrid to Skopje, you’ll want to organize your trip on a timetable.
You can’t leave Skopje without immersing yourself in its rich history. Begin your tour at the iconic Stone Bridge, which connects the old and new portions of the city and offers views of the Vardar River.
Nearby, the Skopje Fortress, also known as Kale, provides a glimpse into the city's past with its ancient walls and panoramic views. The Old Bazaar, one of the largest in the Balkans, is a must-visit for its streets, traditional shops, and vibrant atmosphere. You can shop for local crafts and antiques and learn about the history of Greater Albania.
Skopje’s history has been etched into its art, present in various museums and galleries in the city.
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle offers an in-depth look at the nation's history and fight for independence. The Museum of Contemporary Art features works by both local and international artists, providing insight into the modern art scene in North Macedonia.
Though Skopje is over 6,000 miles (over 10,000 kilometers) from Mexico—with a flight that takes around 14 hours to complete, it would seem odd to find Mexican influences in the Balkans. Yet, there are many Mexican-Macedonian restaurants that’ll blow your mind. Head to Amigos, Oljo’s Street Food, or The Friends Pub for these dishes.
Taking on challenges in escape rooms is the best way to bond especially if you’re traveling with friends. One of the most recommended escape rooms in Skopje is The Cube. You and your friends are trapped inside a room as you team up to solve puzzles and mysteries in an hour, or you’ll lose the game. Choose a theme from pop culture such as “Indiana Jones,” “Harry Potter,” “Saw,” and more.
Deciding when to travel from Ohrid to Skopje depends on your preferences for weather and tolerance for crowds.
Spring and autumn offer mild weather and fewer crowds, while summer is perfect for enjoying festivals and outdoor events.
Some of the events to look forward to are the Ohrid Calling EDM festival and the Skopsko Leto or Skopje Summer held every July.
Winter provides a unique experience with winter sports and festive decorations. If you arrive closer to the end of the year, you can also explore their Christmas markets.
March, November, and May are the rainiest months, so visit from May to October for the best weather conditions.

28. Feb. 2025“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”

20. Feb. 2025“We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”

10. Feb. 2025“We used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.”
