Peel back layers of millennia of history at Phoenice, where both an ancient Greek civilization once stood, as well as 20th-century bunkers.
Phoenice Archaeological Park is a step back in time to one of Epirus' most significant ancient cities. It is perched strategically on a hillside, still ready to defend its residents from foreign invaders. Archeologists have been chipping away at the ruins to reveal the complex history of the Chaonian Greek tribe, from its 5th-century BC origins to its Byzantine-era transformation. The remarkable ruins include a massive theater, luxurious residential complexes, and extensive fortification walls that once protected the wealthiest city in the region. In a surprising twist, communist-era bunkers now intermingle with ancient structures, creating a unique landscape that bridges multiple historical periods. Please note that this stop does not have many facilities, so please bring your own water and a hat, especially during the hot summer months.
